We can’t be too exemplary
The eyes of the people of the world are beginning to be
focused on us; and, as humanity's plight goes from bad to worse, we will be
watched ever more intently by non-Baha'is, to see whether we do uphold our own
institutions whole-heartedly; whether we are the people of the new creation or
not; whether we live up to our beliefs, principles and laws in deed as well as
word. We cannot be too careful. We cannot be too exemplary.

What it means to be a real Christian
Therefore, to be a Christian is not merely to bear the name
of Christ and say, "I belong to a Christian government." To be a real
Christian is to be a servant in His Cause and Kingdom, to go forth under His
banner of peace and love toward all mankind, to be self-sacrificing and
obedient, to become quickened by the breaths of the Holy Spirit, to be mirrors
reflecting the radiance of the divinity of Christ, to be fruitful trees in the
garden of His planting, to refresh the world by the water of life of His
teachings -- in all things to be like Him and filled with the spirit of His
love.

Followers’ Expectations of Fulfillment of Prophecies
As the adherents of Jesus have never understood the hidden
meaning of these words, and as the signs which they and the leaders of their
Faith have expected have failed to appear, they therefore refused to
acknowledge, even until now, the truth of those Manifestations of Holiness that
have since the days of Jesus been made manifest. They have thus deprived
themselves of the outpourings of God’s holy grace, and of the wonders of His
divine utterance. Such is their low estate in this, the Day of Resurrection!
They have even failed to perceive that were the signs of the Manifestation of
God in every age to appear in the visible realm in accordance with the text of
established traditions, none could possibly deny or turn away, nor would the
blessed be distinguished from the miserable, and the transgressor from the
God-fearing. Judge fairly: Were the prophecies recorded in the Gospel to be
literally fulfilled; were Jesus, Son of Mary, accompanied by angels, to descend
from the visible heaven upon the clouds; who would dare to disbelieve, who
would dare to reject the truth, and wax disdainful? Nay, such consternation
would immediately seize all the dwellers of the earth that no soul would feel
able to utter a word, much less to reject or accept the truth.

1922: Baha’is of Britain formed a National Council [1] – the Guardian delineates its duties
I need hardly tell you how grateful and gratified I felt
when I heard the news of the actual formation of a National Council whose main
object is to guide, co-ordinate and harmonise the various activities of the
friends, and when I learned of its satisfactory composition, its harmonious
procedure and the splendid work it is achieving.
My earnest prayer is that the blessing of the Almighty may
rest upon all its deliberations, that it may be divinely guided, inspired in
its work, may smooth speedily and definitely all differences that may arise,
may promote the all-important work of Teaching, may widen the sphere of its
correspondence and exchange of news with the distant parts of the Bahá'í world,
may secure through its publications a dignified and proper presentation of the
Cause to the enlightened public, and may in every other respect prove itself
capable of distinct and worthy achievements.

Resurrection of Jesus Christ
From: Baha’i
Pilgrim Notes
'Abdu'l-Baha said:
Jesus Christ had two bodies -- one spiritual and one
material.
The material body is of no importance; it changes and
changes and changes always. An old person's body is not the same, as that of
the same individual when young.
The visible world does nothing but change, and change leads
to annihilation.
We must be sure that when the soul of man leaves his body,
it never returns to that body again.
In the Gospel record, when Jesus Christ was crucified and
ascended, Mary Magdalene and the other disciples had fallen into such a state
of excitement and agitation, that during three days the cause of God was
annihilated for them. After three days their agitation having abated, they
realised that the cause of Jesus Christ, and His teaching was everlasting in
the world. The disciples would not at first write to the other believers openly
that Jesus was crucified till Mary Magdalene said to them what does it matter;
His soul is with us. When Jesus was crucified, some said ‘His religion is
annihilated and gone.’ Mary Magdalene said ‘Matter is gone, and flesh -- but
the soul of the religion is forever.’

Paragraph 1.7 of Surih of Temple in 'The Summons of the Lord of Hosts'
"O people of the Bayan! If ye aid Him not, God will
assuredly assist Him with the powers of earth and heaven, and sustain Him with
the hosts of the unseen through His command "Be", and it is! The day
is approaching when God will have, by an act of His Will, raised up a race of
men the nature of which is inscrutable to all save God, the All-Powerful, the
Self-Subsisting. He shall purify them from the defilement of idle fancies and
corrupt desires, shall lift them up to the heights of holiness, and shall cause
them to manifest the signs of His sovereignty and might upon earth. Thus hath
it been ordained by God, the All-Glorious, the All-Loving."
Comments:
· As we know, the “people of Bayan” is a reference to the
followers of the Bab. It’s very sad that most of Baha’u’llah’s sufferings were
caused by those followers of the Bab, albeit a very small group, that didn’t
recognize Him as the Promised One of the Bab and did their best to discredit
and harm Him. For example this reference from the beloved Master:
“…the people of Bayan who broke the Covenant of His
Holiness, the Báb, and from six directions shot arrows of reproach and calumny
at Thy Blessed Body.” (‘Abdu’l-Baha, Baha'i World Faith, p. 433)
· This paragraph also reminds us that the Manifestation of
God has the full support of God and that God will “assist Him with the powers
of earth and heaven, and sustain Him with the hosts of the unseen …” We may
wonder, isn’t this obvious, since after all He is trying to do God’s Will.
Maybe part of the wisdom of us being reminded of this point is to have absolute
faith and confidence in the ability of the Manifestation of God to “assist” and
“sustain” us when we are in need, since He has the full support of God.

The re-opening to pilgrims Baha’u’llah’s Cell in the Most Great Prison – from a talk by Hartmut Grossman, 2003
The Universal House of Justice views the re-opening of the
Cell of Baha’u’llah as being a very significant event, so much so that prior to
the pilgrims’ visit, all of the members went to the Cell as a Body to say
special prayers.
We should remember the suffering that occurred at this
prison - the prison designated by Him as the Most Great Prison, which is deeply
significant considering the conditions under which He suffered in the
‘Black-Pit’, the Siyah-Chal, in Tehran. He had just arrived when he was forced
to sell His carpet, the carpet He used to sleep on, to pay for the funeral
expenses of one of the members of His entourage. Even after paying the
expenses, the body was still treated very disrespectfully, but He had to make
the attempt. It was while confined to this Cell that He sacrificed His son.
Many, many other afflictions were faced by Him there.

Baha’u’llah demonstrates how one’s attitude towards the Manifestations of God should be
From: Baha’i Stories
One day the youthful Blessed Beauty [Baha'u'llah] was present
at a gathering convened by Mirza Nazar-'Ali, the Sufi murshid (spiritual guide)
who was more highly esteemed at the court of Muhammad Shah [the Persian
reigning monarch] than the prime minister himself, Haji Mirza Aqasi. The
discourse of Mirza Nazar-'Ali had developed to the point of claiming: 'I shall
be the last to hold the seat of mystical learning; the succession of great
occupants will end with me, for I have attained such a degree of resignation
that should Jesus Christ Himself suddenly appear in the doorway, it would cause
no change in my state.'
Everyone nodded and murmured assent except Baha'u'llah, Who
addressed the speaker: 'Jinab-i-Hakim, [your honor, the wise one] I shall ask
you a question, and I urge you to give a truthful reply. If, without your
consent, the curtain should be raised and the royal executioner enter, sword in
hand and advancing towards you, would this affect your composure?'
After a moment's reflection Mirza Nazar - 'Ali replied,
'Yes, it would affect me.'
‘In that case’, Baha’u’llah stated, ‘you should not have
made such a claim.’

The “human soul” is that “all-unifying agency” that connects “the various organs and members, the parts and elements, that constitute the body of man”
By nature is meant those inherent properties and necessary
relations derived from the realities of things. And these realities of things,
though in the utmost diversity, are yet intimately connected one with the
other. For these diverse realities an all-unifying agency is needed that shall
link them all one to the other. For instance, the various organs and members,
the parts and elements, that constitute the body of man, though at variance,
are yet all connected one with the other by that all-unifying agency known as
the human soul, that causeth them to function in perfect harmony and with absolute
regularity, thus making the continuation of life possible. The human body,
however, is utterly unconscious of that all-unifying agency, and yet acteth
with regularity and dischargeth its functions according to its will.

Divine Prophets are Manifestations of Truth
From: Talks of ‘Abdu’l-Baha
November 24, 1911
At the home of Mademoiselle Gastea, Paris, France
All the divine prophets are the Manifestations of Truth. His Highness Moses
declared the Truth. His Highness the Christ spread the Truth. His Highness
Muhammad established the Truth. All the Chosen Ones of God proclaimed the
Truth. His Highness Baha’u’llah unfurled the ensign of Truth. All the
sanctified souls who have stepped into the arena of existence have been the
lamps of Truth.
Truth is the oneness of the kingdom of humanity. Truth is love among the
children of men. Truth is the proclamation of Justice. Truth is divine
guidance. Truth is the virtues and perfections of the human world. Truth is
equality between the people of all countries. Truth is the illumination of the
realm of man.
All the prophets of God have been the heralds of Truth. All have been united
and agreed on this principle. Every prophet predicted the coming of a successor
and every successor acknowledged the Truth of the predecessor.
Moses prophesied the coming of Christ. Christ acknowledged Moses. His Highness
Christ foretold the appearance of Muhammad, and Muhammad accepted the Christ
and Moses. When all these divine prophets were united with each other, why
should we disagree? We are the followers of those holy souls. In the same
manner that the prophets loved each other, we should follow their example, for
we are all the servants of God and the Bounties of the Almighty are encircling
every one.

How early Eastern believers viewed birthday celebrations
It is interesting to note that the early believers in the
East during the days of Bahá'u'lláh and ‘Abdu'l-Bahá never celebrated their own
birthdays. They considered that such an act would imply self-glorification, a
means of boosting one's ego. It never crossed their minds that a certain day
was their birthday. So real and genuine was this attitude that a great many
individuals did not know the exact date of their birth. In the absence of birth
certificates, some parents would record the date of the birth of their children
in a certain book, much as Westerners used the family Bible for the same
purpose. Even then an individual would be deeply insulted if someone wanted to
celebrate his birthday, [1] for the only persons whose birthday merited
celebration were the Prophets and Chosen Ones of God. Instead of celebrating
birthdays, however, these people held regular annual memorial meetings,
inviting their friends to join in remembering one of their loved ones who had
passed away. In such a meeting, they prayed for the progress of his soul,
recounted his services to the Cause, described his qualities, recited Tablets
revealed in his honour, if any, and offered charitable donations on his behalf.
This practice of annual remembrance of the departed, which is not a binding
obligation in the Bahá'í Faith, is now followed by many Bahá'í families. The
organisation of such meetings is not usually the responsibility of the
institutions of the Faith. They are arranged by individuals on the
anniversaries of the passing of their loved ones.
(Adib Taherzadeh, ‘The Covenant of Baha'u'llah’)
(Adib Taherzadeh, ‘The Covenant of Baha'u'llah’)
[1] It must be noted that there is nothing in the Bahá'í writings either to
condemn the celebration of one's birthday or to encourage it. (Adib
Taherzadeh, ‘The Covenant of Baha'u'llah’)

addressed all who are in heaven and all who are on earth, saying: By God! This
is the Best-Beloved of the worlds, and yet ye comprehend not. This is the
Beauty of God amongst you, and the power of His sovereignty within you, could

God and His glory unto all who are in the kingdoms of Revelation and of
creation, if ye be of them that perceive. This is He Whose Presence is the
ardent desire of the denizens of the Realm of eternity, and of them that dwell
within the Tabernacle of glory, and yet from His Beauty do ye turn aside."
Comments:
Let’s repeat the incredible pronouncements that the Maid of Heaven
(representing the Most Great Spirit) makes concerning Baha’u’llah:
· “the Best-Beloved of the worlds”;
· “the Beauty of God amongst” us;
· “the power of His[God’s] sovereignty within” us;
· “the Mystery of God and His[God’s] Treasure;
· “the Cause of God and His[God’s] glory unto all who are in the kingdoms of Revelation and of creation”;
· “He Whose Presence is the ardent desire of the denizens of the Realm of eternity..”;
· “He Whose Presence is the ardent desire of … them that dwell within the Tabernacle of glory…”
· “the Beauty of God amongst” us;
· “the power of His[God’s] sovereignty within” us;
· “the Mystery of God and His[God’s] Treasure;
· “the Cause of God and His[God’s] glory unto all who are in the kingdoms of Revelation and of creation”;
· “He Whose Presence is the ardent desire of the denizens of the Realm of eternity..”;
· “He Whose Presence is the ardent desire of … them that dwell within the Tabernacle of glory…”
These are awe-inspiring references!

The effect of 'Abdu'l-Baha's visit on Britain and the spiritual qualities of British believers
That in every one of you our departed Master reposed His
future and truest hopes for an able and convincing presentation of the Cause to
the outside world, is abundantly revealed in His spoken and written words to
you, as well as in His general references to the spirit of sincerity, of
tenacity and devotion that animates His friends of that land.
The fierce tests that have raged over that island in the past; the calm and
determination with which they have been so bravely faced and surmounted; the
seeds of loving fellowship that the Beloved in person has more than once
scattered in its soil; the rise, as its result, of a few but indeed capable,
reliable, devoted and experienced followers and admirers of the Cause; the
splendid and in many instances unique opportunities that are yours -- these
indeed are cherished thoughts for a land that illumines its past and should
cheer its future. (Shoghi Effendi, excerpt from a letter dated 16 December

Difficulties Experienced by Each Manifestation of God
Judge thou fairly, I adjure thee
by God. What proof did the Jewish doctors adduce wherewith to condemn Him Who
was the Spirit of God (Jesus Christ), when He came unto them with truth? What
could have been the evidence produced by the Pharisees and the idolatrous
priests to justify their denial of Muhammad, the Apostle of God when He came
unto them with a Book that judged between truth and falsehood with a justice
which turned into light the darkness of the earth, and enraptured the hearts of
such as had known Him? (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p.
81)
Consider and call thou to mind the days whereon the Spirit of God (Jesus
Christ) appeared, and Herod gave judgment against Him. God, however, aided Him
with the hosts of the unseen, and protected Him with truth, and sent Him down
unto another land, according to His promise. He, verily, ordaineth what He
pleaseth. Thy Lord truly preserveth whom He willeth, be he in the midst of the
seas or in the maw of the serpent, or beneath the sword of the oppressor." (Baha'u'llah,
Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 57)
He that married not (Jesus Christ) could find no place wherein to abide, nor
where to lay His head, by reason of what the hands of the treacherous had
wrought. His holiness consisted not in the things ye have believed and
imagined, but rather in the things which belong unto Us. Ask, that ye may be
made aware of His station which hath been exalted above the vain imaginings of
all the peoples of the earth. Blessed are they that understand. (Baha'u'llah,
Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 49)

Divine Lote-Tree
From: Baha’i Glossary
A reference to the tree beyond which there is no passing - in
ancient times, the tree that Arabs planted to mark the end of a road. In Islam,
the term symbolizes the point in the heavens beyond which neither humans nor
angels can pass in their approach to God, thus delimiting the bounds of divine
knowledge as revealed to humankind. In Baha’i usage it is a reference to the
Messenger of God - i.e., Baha’u’llah.

Baha'u'llah Sought Justice as a Child
From: Baha’i Stories
While still a child, the Blessed Beauty (Baha'u'llah)
watched as a government tax-collector, on three separate occasions, accosted
His father and demanded, in cruel and unjust manner, the payment of taxes.
Unable to bear the injustice of it all, He, though in early childhood, mounted
His horse and rode fpr two days until He arrived in Tihran (the capital of
Persia). There He sought the dismissal of this unjust and tyrannical
tax-collectot. He succeeded in obtaining the necessary papers ordering the
dismissal, and returned to His parents.

Each believer should “pattern his life according to the Teachings” – no “set of rigid regulations”
It is neither possible nor desirable for the Universal House
of Justice to set forth a set of rules covering every situation. Rather is it
the task of the individual believer to determine, according to his own
prayerful understanding of the Writings, precisely what his course of conduct
should be in relation to situations which he encounters in his daily life. If
he is to fulfil his true mission in life as a follower of the Blessed
Perfection, he will pattern his life according to the Teachings. The believer
cannot attain this objective merely by living according to a set of rigid
regulations. When his life is oriented toward service to Bahá'u'lláh, and when
every conscious act is performed within this frame of reference, he will not
fail to achieve the true purpose of his life.
Therefore, every believer must continually study the sacred
Writings and the instructions of the beloved Guardian, striving always to
attain a new and better understanding of their import to him and to his
society. He should pray fervently for Divine Guidance, wisdom and strength to
do what is pleasing to God, and to serve Him at all times and to the best of
his ability.

Sovereign, the Mighty, the All-Praised. Say: The Mashriqu'l-Adhkár is each and
every building which hath been erected in cities and villages for the
celebration of My praise. Such is the name by which it hath been designated
before the throne of glory, were ye of those who understand.

October 27, 1957: Shoghi Effendi caught Asiatic influenza in London and a doctor prescribed medicine
On Sunday afternoon[while in London], October 27th, Shoghi
Effendi told Ruhiyyih Khanum that he had a pain across his knuckles in both
hands; she asked him if he had any other pains, and he said no, that just his
fingers pained him and were stir He added: "I feel so tired, so
tired." She begged him to rest, saying that if he did not wish to go to
bed, at least he should rest quietly because the probability was that he was
getting the influenza which was sweeping through Europe and indeed all over the
world. (She herself had been in bed with fever since Thursday night.) That
night he had a fever and by the following day his temperature had risen to
thirty-nine degrees. Ruhiyyih Khanum succeeded in finding an excellent doctor
who had taken over the practice of a well-known Harley Street physician who had
retired. This doctor was contacted and immediately prescribed medicine for the
beloved Guardian and came to see him early in the evening when he was able to
get away from his hospital. He examined his patient very carefully; heart,
chest, temperature, pulse, etc., and said that he considered that both the
Guardian and Ruhiyyih Khanum had cases of Asiatic influenza, the beloved
Guardian's case being the more severe.

To train our soul in this life so that “at the hour of death, [it will] ascend, in the utmost purity and sanctity and with absolute detachment.”
The Prophets and Messengers of God have been sent down for
the sole purpose of guiding mankind to the straight Path of Truth. The purpose
underlying Their revelation hath been to educate all men, that they may, at the
hour of death, ascend, in the utmost purity and sanctity and with absolute
detachment, to the throne of the Most High.

“Arise from the corporeal beds (bodies) and ask for the divine favors…
O thou who art attracted by the Fragrances of
God!
Verily I say unto thee the truth, that I am with you in
spirit and in heart, that I rejoice by your joy and am happy by your happiness;
and hear with the ear of spirit your calling and scent with the spiritual
nostrils the fragrances of your garden.
O ye friends of God! Arise from the corporeal beds (bodies)
and ask for the divine favors, so that ye become revived by the Holy Spirit
through the breath which the Spirit breathes into the souls.
By the glory of my Lord, there will be for your brilliant
assemblage an evident sign and great effects in the spirits and the hearts.
Therefore, gladden the friends of the Merciful with the glad-tidings of thy
Lord in this time, and convey to them greeting from ‘Abdu’l-Baha in this
promised century, so that they may arise with me in servitude to the Threshold
of El-Baha.

Marriage should be viewed as a “fortress for well-being and salvation”
And when He [God] desired to manifest grace and
beneficence to men, and to set the world in order, He revealed observances and
created laws; among them He established the law of marriage, made it as a
fortress for well-being and salvation, and enjoined it upon us in that which
was sent down out of the heaven of sanctity in His Most Holy Book. He saith,
great is His glory: "Marry, O people, that from you may appear he who will
remember Me amongst My servants; this is one of My commandments unto you; obey
it as an assistance to yourselves."

Teaching the Cause
O thou maid-servant of God! Whenever thou art intending to
deliver a speech, turn thy face toward the Kingdom of Abha and, with a heart
detached, begin to talk. The breaths of the Holy Spirit will assist thee.

God is the Great Compassionate Physician Who Alone Gives Healing - a talk by 'Abdu'l-Baha
From: Talks of ‘Abdu’l-Baha
October 19th, 1911, Paris
All true healing comes from God! There are two causes for sickness, one is
material, the other spiritual. If the sickness is of the body, a material
remedy is needed, if of the soul, a spiritual remedy.
If the heavenly benediction be upon us while we are being healed then only can
we be made whole, for medicine is but the outward and visible means through
which we obtain the heavenly healing. Unless the spirit be healed, the cure of
the body is worth nothing. All is in the hands of God, and without Him there
can be no health in us!
There have been many men who have died at last of the very disease of which
they have made a special study. Aristotle, for instance, who made a special
study of the digestion, died of a gastronomic malady. Aviseu was a specialist
of the heart, but he died of heart disease. God is the great compassionate
Physician who alone has the power to give true healing.
All creatures are dependent upon God, however great may seem their knowledge,
power and independence.

London: ‘Abdu’l-Baha used “the power of Baha’u’llah” -- an incident witnessed by Lady Blomfield
One day after a meeting when, as
usual, many people had crowded round Him, 'Abdu'l-Bahá arrived home very tired.
We were sad at heart that He should be so fatigued, and bewailed the many steps
to be ascended to the flat. Suddenly, to our amazement, the Master ran up the
stairs to the top very quickly without stopping.
He looked down at us as we walked up after Him, saying with a bright smile,
from which all traces of fatigue had vanished:
"You are all very old! I am very young!"
Seeing me full of wonder, 'Abdu'l-Bahá said: "Through the power of
Bahá'u'lláh all things can be done. I have just used that power."
That was the only time we had ever seen Him use that power for Himself, and I
feel that He did so then to cheer and comfort us, as we were really sad
concerning His fatigue.
Might it not also have been to show us an example of the great Reserve of
Divine Force always available for those of us who are working in various ways
in the "Path of the Love of God and of Mankind." A celestial strength
which reinforces us when our human strength fails.

Commentary on the first few words of the thirtieth Súrah of the Qur'án: the Súrah of al-Rúm (Rome) – by ‘Abdu’l-Baha
-- provisional translation by Moojan Momen
(please see some background information at the end of the
Tablet)
He is the All- Glorious!
Praise be to Thee, O Lord! O my God! Out of Thy Bounty and
Mercy, Thou hast caused the waters of existence to descend from the heaven of
Thy Oneness and Thou hast caused the showers of Thine Eternal Bounties to rain
down from the clouds of the heaven of Thy Mighty Oneness until, through this most
mighty Beneficence, the rivers of Thy most wondrous Grace flowed forth upon the
soil of all possible existent realities in Thine act of Creation. All lands and
regions were watered by these streaming, heavenly rivers. Every hill and city
was inundated by these torrential celestial floods. And then there shone forth
upon them the sun of Thy Mercy from the horizon of Thy holy Might. And the
grains, O my God, of Thine Exalted Word and Thy Most Mighty Verses were sown in
the earth of human capacity by Thy great Grace and Favour.

The Reality of Man is His Thought
The reality of man is his thought, not
his material body. The thought force and the animal force are partners. .... If
a man's thought is constantly aspiring towards heavenly subjects then does he
become saintly; if on the other hand his thought does not soar, but is directed
downwards to centre itself upon the things of this world, he grows more and more
material until he arrives at a state little better than that of a mere animal.

Ruhiyyih Khanum’s Message to First Canadian National Convention - 1948
To the Delegates and Friends attending the First Canadian
National Baha'i Convention.
Dear Friends:
What a blessing and privilege to be allowed to raise my
voice on this historic occasion, even though from across two seas, and address
these words to you in my own home. You who are gathered here see this room,
these walls and doors clearly, but I assure you they rise up before my eyes
dimmed by the passing years, sanctified by memory and longing, and what comes
to my mind is a nostalgic co-mingling of the past and the future.
Strangely enough the most vivid picture is one neither I—nor
probably one of you -- can remember as an eye witness: 'Abdu'l Baha addressing
in this very room, a group of believers and guests. The strong, sad, wise face;
the silvery hair; the beautiful, understanding blue eyes that swa the reality
of things, the reality of evil, the reality of error, of failure and deviation,
and yet looked upon all men with a loving and gentle spirit and filled them
with hope, -- this is the first and most vivid imprint of all, which surely
clings to this house so blessed by His presence. And what He said on that
occasion must have for you, I feel, now gathered here to carry on His work at
such an important juncture in Canadian history, a special message and a special
significance. He opened his speech with these words:

-Shoghi
Cablegram received August 6, 1951.
Dearly loved, universally respected Louis G. Gregory passed away on July 30,
1951. Although he had been frail in body for many months, the luminous spirit
and great heart were so apparent, so overwhelming, that none anticipated his
sudden departure.
Only a week before, he had arranged and carried out a meeting in his home in
Eliot, Maine, where he discussed the prophecies in the Bible, with their import
for these perilous times. The dozen or more who gathered there will forever
treasure this meeting which proved to be his last. Seated at his desk, his warm
and radiant smile welcoming everyone, with his indescribable spiritual dignity,
a manifest evidence of the world in which he lived, he carried on the meeting
with joy and radiance.

20 December 1922: Message from Shoghi Effendi to the Baha'is of Australia
To the Baha’is of Australia
My dearest co-workers in that distant land:-
How great was my joy to learn that in that far-away continent, remote from the
turmoil and restlessness of a weary world, the Voice of God has been raised and
proclaimed and has attracted such a promising number of ardent and faithful
lovers of Baha’u’llah.
I offer you my heartfelt love and sympathy and the assurance of my unfailing
assistance in the great work of service to mankind which is now so gloriously
unfolding itself to your eyes.
I have shared fully your news with those loving pilgrims and resident friends
in the Holy land whom I meet regularly in what was in the past the
audience-chamber of the Master and who thirst after the tidings of the progress
of the Cause in every land. They, and myself with them, will pray most
fervently for every one of you that the seeds of faith and loving fellowship
that you are casting in the soil of hearts may geminate and swell the ever
increasing number of the valiant hosts of Baha and enable them to attain
glorious victory.
I shall await with eager expectation the welcome news of the extension of your
activities, the widening of your correspondence with the various spiritual
centres throughout the world, the plans you contemplate for the spreading of
the Movement and the means you will utilise for their speedy execution. On my
part I shall never neglect to send you such news as will urge you to press
forward your great work for the Cause and hearten you in your labours of love
and devotion at His Sacred Threshold.
Your brother in His Service,
Shoghi
